The other morning I found the frost had left this ice skin on the very top of the garden water butt. We’ve had days of rain and it was filled to the brim with downpourings from the old privy roof. MostΒ curious, I thought. It looks like a pile of actual leaves, some reedy plant, say. Or else in some mysterious way the water’s surface had replicated, as it froze, the flattened leaves of the Crocosmia that grows a few feet away over the fence. So does this mean that a common or garden water butt can make art; or create, when the elements conspire, its own version of monochrome digital images? It would seem so. I herewith proffer the evidence.
Ceeβs Black & White Photo Challenge: close-upsΒ
This week Cee gives up lots of close-up inspiration. Please pay her a visit.
Very interesting. Art in nature is definitely a fact.
It is, isn’t it. And a fact hugely and deeply more worthwhile than so many other ‘facts’ that are foisted daily upon us.
Love the pattern
Thanks, Sherry. It was surprising.
Ice does do strange things. I have always enjoyed frost on windows and especially snow flakes.
Yes, frost on windows. I loved that as a child. It simply doesn’t happen in our double-glazed and heated homes.
LOL…I still live in an old, cold house. Even here in the South USA we get ice on the windows.
π Am thinking of you in your old cold southern house π
Does look like crocosmia fronds! Gosh youβre giving me PTSD having yanked out hundreds of that same plant from our yard this week…the browned, flopped-over kind. Greetings to you Tish! Wishing you well. Thanks for sharing this, odd and ghost-like!
Happy to provide the odd and ghostly, Bill. And many thanks for the good wishes. Hope all is well with you and yours.
Nature defines art.
That’s a great photo, Tish. Thanks for sharing.
‘nature defines art’ – nicely put, Thom.
We’ve had rain too here. Wonderful photo for this week. π
Thank you, Cee π
It’s definitely art and beautiful art at that.
janet
Like minds, eh.
I’ll take that as a compliment. π
π π It works both ways.
I’ll pat your back, you pat mine? π
Astonishing! I won’t mention how dry it’s been here in the last two days (mock ye not).
Dryness – good heavens, Mike, what strange circumstance is this? I’ve been slithering about in mud for weeks now.
That’s a fascinating phenomenon — especially to a Southern Californian, where the temps have been in the 70’s this week and will likely remain about the same!
Temps in the 70s sound very nice π
Artist is obviously Jack Frost!
Of course it is. Clever you for ID-ing the maker.
We saw his work regularly last winter!
He wasn’t exhibiting in Wenlock, which is odd because it’s usually one of his favourite spots.
Be grateful, his work can be harsh at times!!
Nature brings us art.
So much so that my initial thought was what skin of ice… is it clinging to those wet leaves? (or words to that effect!) Isn’t nature magical?
It is magical. A sort of ‘look, no leaves!’ moment π
