Last Saturday I somehow lost track of five whole hours. There is so much to do up at the allotment – weeding, picking peas, strawberries and raspberries, digging up the new potatoes, tying up the tomatoes in the polytunnel, watering, feeding, turning the compost heap, sowing more peas, constructing pigeon defence systems, wandering about neighbours’ plots, taking a few snaps.
But one of the nice things about having the polytunnel is that when a storm strikes, I can potter around in there until the downpour passes. As you can see from the sky, we were in for a deluge, and I caught these poppies just as it was arriving. There was something malignant, I thought, about their stance. Something a little predatory about those seed capsules. Perhaps I’ve been spending too much time in the garden.

beautiful picture
Stunning photo Tish.

😀
Great shot upward at the flower. Love it! Colors really pop right off the screen, too.
It’s good to know something ‘pops’ round here. Glad it works.
I see beauty only 🙂
Good on you, Tiny 🙂
A great title, and a superb photo of the low down up kind! “Serried ranks” is a phrase that comes to mind, as does “Day of the triffids”. And yet such beauty of colour and form too.
I thought triffids too. I like the ambiguity of beauty together with a hint of the sinister 🙂
Hahaha your imagination is running away with you!
It often does 🙂
I’m with Gilly. 😀 They do look somewhat unfriendly though. Do be careful around them. 😯
I’ll stick to my own plot. Promise!
Love the photo! I didn’t see the poppies as sinister on first impression – but rather bursting with life energy. Their strength and vibrancy is much enhanced by the lowering sky and by your viewpoint at ground level. Beautiful!
Hello, Kate. I like your take on this too. You’re back. Must catch up with you 🙂
Funny. I thought of the Triffids as well. The y look ready to march off. I can hear them rattling. 🙂
Oh yes, rattling, Marie. Now that is a little creepy. I wonder what will happen next…
Where on earth–or, should I say, off earth?–did you find a photo of giant space trees! Awesome.
Oh I like that idea – giant space trees. It’s amazing what happens when you lie down in the allotment – all sorts of things can happen 🙂
Absolutely stunning! I love the mood.
Thank you, Dancing Echoes. You put your finger on it ‘the mood’. The poppies do appear to create their own mood.
Bradburian almost in their stance, rather Martianish.
Now that’s a very good adjective – Bradburian 🙂
I absolutely love this image…….and thank goodness for polly tunnels…because I think you will need them this week:)
It’s looking like it so far. Time for more tomato tying up methinks 🙂
such beautiful poppies. And fine photography too.
Thank you. I’m doing a lot more lying down to photograph things these days.
Lying down on the job again Tish? Love the poppies and the angle you have captured them at 🙂
I only hope my fellow allotmenteers don’t wonder what I’m up to 🙂
I thought poly-tunnels were just for the wee folk but now I see they come in human height – the dark heart of the poppies conjured this storm by the look of things
My polytunnel is 14 feet long, and 8 feet tall – and it’s great, but already I have created tomato chaos inside it. You know, I think you’re right, those poppies did conjure up the storm 🙂
Now that you say it, they do look sinister to me………. 🙂
🙂
Nice photograph. The poppies in our garden are beginning to ”sprout”. No flowers yet, but give it a coupe of weeks. I shall post.
😉
I’d say “defiant” Tish as in “bring it on”…. Great photo…
I’ll go for that interpretation, Pauline 🙂
Stunning!!
😀
Love the angle you took for this photo, Tish. Beautiful!
🙂
Wonderful photograph – when I had to think about it, all I could come up with was heroin 😦
I think they do look like heroin poppies now you mention it, Footsy; a reminder of their sinister side, or at least the sinister use to which humans put them.
We had a deluge today too. Nice natured poppies though 🙂
Nothing worse than a bad tempered poppy. No knowing what havoc it might wreak. Benign is good 🙂
