Zanzibar is of course famous as a spice island. The Omani Sultans once made fortunes from their clove plantations there. And while saffron, I am sure, is not one of the local commodities, Stone Town at sunset seems bathed in a saffron light. It is the kind of light that makes you wonder if you are awake or dreaming.
I have written more about the island HERE and Swahili Culture HERE

Really like the Dolphin Restaurant shot, makes you want to go inside – is that a Moke outside?
Yes, a yellow Moke. It’s fun isn’t it.
These are really gorgeous. I am so drawn to your first image. The building and car, that have clearly worn over the years, yet still feel very much alive. The lighting looks hot and peaceful. Thank you so much for sharing.
Well thank you for the inspiring prompt, Jennifer.
A place I would love to visit…and the light you describe is something I would love. Your images are beautiful….and I have alwaysI loved the name ‘Zanzibar’ – so exotic:) Janet.
Zanzibar does it for me too, word-wise. I think you would fill masses of sketch books if you went there, Janet. A perpetual state of sensory overload probably sums up visitor experience on the island. I did not mention the scents of spices and jasmine…
Love your photos and your interpretation of saffron. 🙂
Thank you, Dorne.
Incredible colors! Especially now as I look out my window and all I see is gray and white.
I’ve been thinking of you in all that snow. A touch of tropical colour and heat would be welcome in Shropshire too. Today, at least, we have sunshine.
Gorgeous photos. They make me want to go there 🙂
Alison
It’s a lovely island to visit. It has everything – beaches, ruins, spice farms, dhows, and above all, very hospitable locals.
Beautiful photos. The coconut trees add such beauty to the landscape.
Thank you. The palms do indeed add an atmosphere and dimension all their own.
Thanks. Will check out your other pieces on Africa. Those saphron photos are very nice.
the sunset in Zanzibar is breathtaking .
I love your photos
Hello Noel. Glad you liked the pix.
Memories of Zanzibar will always stay in my mind. It was three years ago, but I still can describe the feeling when I got lost in Stone Town (which I enjoyed, by the way), ate amazing food at Forodhani Garden, watched sunset while children played and jumped in the water, observed fishermen coming and going, and many more. I wish I could come back someday..
You have captured it so well in your words, Nurul.
This is lovely. The first photo is striking. Did you notice that as it opens all you see are primary colours?
That’s very noticing of you to notice, Ark. The effect was of course quite accidental. But thank you all the same.
I’d love to visit this place, the pictures are stunning, rich with art and nature. I really like the saffron color light… beautiful 🙂
Many thanks, Kabir.
You’re welcome, Tish 🙂
You are right, it seems as if bathed in the saffron light. Remarkable images, Tish!
Beautiful photos, Tish! Thank you for sharing!
