I’ve been amazed how striking bean flowers are when you give them a good hard look. These field beans (fava beans, a smaller version of the broad bean) are mostly grown in the UK for green manure (ploughed in before flowering) or if left to mature into a crop, used as animal feed. Yet the little beans are delicious – though a bit fiddly to extract from their pods.
